Watch: Bubble-net Fishing Is An Art Perfected By Humpback Whales!Mitchell Diep
Humpback whales are known for their intelligence and their ability to cooperate with other whales to achieve a common goal. In this case, that goal is to feed. Uniques to humpback whales, this fishing method shown in the video below is called “bubble-net feeding”, this takes a lot of coordination between a group of whales to trap and feed on school fish, like herring.
So what exactly is bubble-net feeding and how does it work? In short, bubble-net feeding is when a group of whales circulate around a school of fish, drawing nearer to each other with every pass. In doing so, they blow bubbles below the school of fish and then the column of said bubbles surround their prey — forcing the fish to the surface. The whales spontaneously swim upward through the bubble net, mouths wide open, catching thousands of fish in one gulp
