Sea stars, or starfish, are integral members of the ecosystems of North Americas west coast. However, due to unknown reasons, sea stars are rapidly dying off at unprecedented rates, which could mean dire consequences for all other wildlife in the area as well.
Some scientists suspect a virus or bacteria is causing the mysterious and widespread affliction, which is being called “sea star wasting syndrome,” but no one knows the cause for certain. Although similar die-offs of sea stars have occurred in the past, the current rate of the syndrome is higher and more widespread than ever before.
