The waters of the Pacific off the coast of northern California are so cold that most mammals — the ones without blubber — wouldn’t last very long before becoming a block of ice. However, the magnificent fur coat of an otter helps it to thrive in such frigid temperatures.

Otters have the thickest fur of any animal on the planet. Their coats have the incredible ability to trap in air, which gives these little creatures enough insulation to keep warm in their gelid habitats.
