RARE: Watch a Volcano Erupt into a Bed of Snow!

A group of scientists from Dickinson College caught some incredible rare footage of an epic battle between fire and ice!

When the Tolbachik volcano in eastern Russia erupted in winter 2013, the fearless researchers dug in to observe how its lava steamrolled through the snowy terrain.

So what happens when lava and an icy Earth meets? The initial reaction is pretty tame – the ice melts rapidly and a TON of steam is produced. As the melting ice pools, the chilled molten lava domes over and creates a high pressure pocket of steam. And once the pressure is too much for the lava dome to handle, steam jets out from the cooled lava prison in a geyser-like form. And trust me… you wouldn’t want to be near the steam explosion, just ask the scientists on the field!

Watch the video to see what happens when the earth’s molten core meets its frozen surface.
