Once endangered due to habitat destruction and hunting, the giant salamander is making a comeback. These incredible amphibians can grow up to five feet in length and are revered in Japanese legend, but were threatened due to dam construction.

Now, a new system of ramps and staircases added to the dams help the salamanders swim upstream so they can lay their eggs.
