Watch the Unexpected Birth of a False Killer WhaleThe Rainforest Site
This group of whale watchers got a killer surprise on its boat tour. Just off the coast of Dana Point in Southern California, the group bore witness to a once-in-a-lifetime event: the birth of a false killer whale. As its name suggests, the false killer whale bears no direct relation to the killer whale, but is likewise a large species of dolphin. These aquatic mammals travel in pods, this particular pod consisting of roughly 40 blackfish. Upon giving birth, the mama whale worked to keep her newborn close to the surface of the water to help it breathe, with assistance from the rest of the pod. It's safe to say these tourists are going to have a whale of a tale to tell when they get home!
